How does Charity tax relief work ?

As a registered charity we can reclaim tax from your donations if you have donated more than €250 to us in one year

PAYE only: if you are a PAYE only tax payer we can reclaim the tax paid on your donation from revenue.

Self Accessed or corporate you reclaim the tax paid on your donations. You or your company can reclaim the tax from revenue.

How much is my donation worth ?

PAYE Example 1

If an Individual on the standard rate of tax i.e. 20%
donates €500

Value of donation = €625

(i.e. €500 x 100/80 = €625)

Tax associated with the donation (€625 -€500) = €125

H.U.D.T. will therefore be able to claim a repayment of €125 from Revenue at the end of the tax year.

PAYE Example 2

If an Individual on the higher rate of tax i.e. 42%
Individual donates €500

Value of donation = €862

(i.e. €500x100/80= €862)

Tax associated with the donation (€862 - €500) = €362

H.U.D.T. will therefore be able to claim a repayment of €362 from Revenue at the end of the tax year.

Self Assesed or Company Donation

Example 1

Individual on the standard rate i.e. 20%

Individual donates €500 and receives tax relief @ 20% (€100).
Cost to the taxpayer is €400 but we receive €500
The self-assessed individual will simply claim a deduction for the donation on his/ her tax return, there is no grossing up arrangement and therefore no repayment claim by the eligible charity or approved body arises.

This arrangement applies for higher tax rates and company donations.

Will my information remain private?

Yes, your details are private and are only seen by H.U.D.T. and the Revenue Commissioners. This information will not be used for anything other that tax relief and will not be passed on by us.

What if I donate to more than one charity?

If you wish to donate to more than one charity, each charity if eligible can reclaim the amount of tax due to them in relation to the donations made to them within the year.
