In an interview Val Conlon gave to a National newspaper he said:

The first time I went into a Romania orphanage I saw hungry children crawling around on the ground in dirty clothes, they were crawling around because they had deformed limbs through malnutrition. They could not stand or walk. I saw crippled children tied to cots and iron beds, some had been tied to these cots and beds daily, for years, some could not walk, and could only stand by holding the side of the cot or bed.

Val Conlon is the founder of Divine Mercy Publications Ireland, and Divine mercy in Action (H.U.D.T).
He lives in Dublin, Ireland.

I saw other children continuously banging their heads off walls hoping to render themselves unconscious to get away from the their misery for a short time. I saw charities bring them food, new clothes, and new toys, put in central heating, install wash basins, showers, get their pictures taken with the children, and then went home, feeling very good about themselves.

But after the charity group went home the children still dragged themselves around on the ground, but now in new clothes. They still had deformed limbs, but they had new toys to hold with their deformed limbs. Those with dementia, still banged their heads off walls but in new clothes. It was great for them to get loads of food, new clothes, and new toys, but what I could not understand why no one thought of getting them medical aid, surgery and psychiatric help. This was what these children needed more than anything else, to have a chance of some kind of normal life.

These children could not coordinate any real thoughts, or think about nice things or dream nice dreams, because they had never seen anything nice to think or dream about. Most of them were incarcerated as babies. All they had ever seen was the drab walls of the orphanage. They had no real thoughts because they were uneducated; they had no real hope because they had no religion. They had no love because they had no families.

Was it possible that we could intervene and give them these other virtues, they were getting charity, but maybe we could give them faith and hope? Could we help them to stand and walk? Could we do something about their dementia? Could we give them the greatest gift of all, belief in God, through our belief in the message of Divine Mercy, which is what brought us to their country in the first place.
